The Seventh Code - CAIN System Triology Book 1 is an intriguing suspense thriller revolving around the declining and turbulent circumstances encountered by the MS State Inspector General and longtime auditor Matthew Petricelli. Each day brings new and spiraling challenges as Matt and his assistants chase a swirling case of fraud, corruption and criminal actions.
Matt had returned to his home state of Mississippi several years before, leaving a job in Atlanta to work for his college buddy Jack Leonard who had been elected Governor. After a year as the Governor's Budget Officer, Matt was appointed by Governor Leonard to assume the responsibilities of the newly created Inspector General position. For the first few years in that office, Matt and his staff did a tremendous job at cleaning up some fraud, waste and abuse messes. They were so good at their work, their efforts helped Matt's friend get elected to a second term as governor.
Suddenly, Matt's longest standing auditor and fraud investigator Herb Jinson was showing signs of 'burning out' with a serious waning of his attention to the details of his job. Herb was in charge of a comprehensive and very sensitive computer investigation that was critical to the State's operations, but was not performing in his usual highly professional manner. Matt's Audit Manager, Sandy Burtron, wanted Herb to be replaced immediately by a fresh auditor who would pay attention to the fast moving details of the investigation. With Herb 'asleep at the wheel' the potential fraud could easily be covered up never to be reopened. Sandy pushed to replace Herb immediately, but Matt convinced Sandy to hold out for a few days until he could determine the cause of Herb's lack of attention.
As Matt pursues the situation, Herb goes missing. Matt is hurled into a series of events that uncover a staggering level of fraud, collusion and criminal activities that overwhelms him. After he elicits the help of a former colleague and computer expert, Matt chases the case and its myriad of weird turns 'down the rabbit hole.' His friends seem like enemies, and his enemies appear to be friends. Follow Matt as he investigates the many facets of the case and gets in deeper and deeper at every turn.
King of Rules - CAIN System Triology Book 2 After seeking asylum from the swirling series of events protrayed in The Seventh Code, Matthew and his former Audit Manager Sandra Burtron (Sandy) are together in their comfortable refuge in the high desert of Oregon. Matt resumed his former hobby of stained glass artistry and opened a shop close to their new home on the edge of the desert. Their simple routine is brought to a halt as an unrelated series of events leads Marshall Rusty Payton and his team to Matt's glass shop.
Payton and his team provide a return route for Matt and Sandy to leave their refuge and resume their lives in Mississippi. Matt is opposed to the idea of their return, but Sandy, seven months pregnant, is ready to be back home among family and friends before her baby is born. Matt realizes that Sandy needs help and attention that he has no idea about, much less how to provide it, so he concedes that they should leave their desert home and return to Mississippi, even though he is still very suspicious of Marshall Payton and his commitments about their return.
Once home, Matt is invited to join in the endeavor to bring closure to the seventh code usage in the CAIN system and related activities. Immediatley, Matt finds himself once again involved in a series of events full of twists and turns that cause hiim to regret leaving his home in the high desert and coming back to Mississippi. As things progress, Matt faces new realities about his long time friend and colleague Ben Chipman and his wife Barbara. They were not who they seemed to be and bring some severe consequences into Matt's and Sandy's life.
Matt finds himself once again "down the rabbit hole," chasing a rapidly changing set of circumstances that are full of more corruption and murder. Over time, his once nemisis Rusty Payton becomes a trusted friend, along with several members of the investigative team that Matt had become a member of.
